kingdom of Jesus this last year!5

Our Last 12 MonthsLast year at our annual gathering, weshared a few specific, broad-reachinggoals that we planned to pursue. Hereare brief updates about each:WEDNESDAY TOGETHERThis new initiative collected severalministry events on one night of theweek. Since the fall, we’ve been hostingCultivate classes, Growth Groups, ourweekly prayer gathering, and our Echostudent ministry all on Wednesdaynights. In addition to these weeklyministries, we’ve held four meals thathave been very well-attended. Fewertrips to church make family schedulesmore manageable, and there has beenan extra level of energy on Wednesdayswith so much activity!NEW ON-SITE PARTNERSHIPSWalking With A Purpose worksalongside the chronically homeless in theSt. Paul area by building compassionaterelationships and providing food, clothing and camping supplies. Asthe weather warms and cold weathershelters close this time of year, thenumber of people camping out morethan doubles and WWAP has beenbusy with the increase! They are raisingfunds to purchase a used shuttle bus toexpand their ministry and better serviceunsheltered friends in bad weather.WWAP was also contacted to help the2020 census locate the unshelteredcommunity in St Paul. They appreciatetheir partnership with Woodland Hillsand look forward to their future withour church!6Voice In The WildernessOrganization is a non-profit that helpsCongolese refugees achieve stabilityand healthy integration in Minnesota, and gives aid to humanitarian efforts inthe Democratic Republic of the Congo(DRC). In the past year, VWO hasexperienced an increase in their clientelethrough an influx of Congolese refugeesand through word getting out abouttheir services, as they are now accessibleat a physical location. This increase is amixed blessing—VWO is reaching morepeople, but also need more resourcesto keep up with the expansion! Lastsummer, Woodland was able to helpVWO send a group of Congolese kidsto camp for the first time and we planto do so again this summer. VWO alsoconnected with our Missions ministry, who is helping to facilitate their firstmission trip to the DRC later this year. They are grateful for the partnershipwith Woodland and for theiroffices here.OSHETA MOOREOsheta joined our staff as our newOutreach and Teaching Pastor! Inaddition to helping to fill in as aspeaker when Greg is gone, she’s hostedoutreach and community-buildingevents this year, and is currentlyestablishing a leadership team to leada new Women’s Ministry. Osheta hasalso taught at our School of MissionalApprenticeship (SOMA) and helpedlead their Justice Trip where studentstravelled to museums and historical sitesrelated to the Civil Rights Movement. The Congolese Church that meetsin our North Commons is a space ofworship where all are welcome, nomatter their background. They arepassionate about serving and helpingothers. As more refugees arrive from theDemocratic Republic of the Congo, thechurch is growing and has doubled insize since November 2018.An overview of all our on-sitepartnerships is available on pages16-17 of this booklet.7

CAMPAIGNSWe started 2019 with our offerings 91,500 behindbudget. This was much better than in late 2018,when our budget gap was almost 180,000, but it stillwasn’t sustainable. We were concerned that we mighthave to make significant ministry cuts, so we askedour congregation to take a fresh look our giving. The majority of the funds will helpsupport the chronically homeless. We’reinvesting in the construction of a tinyhome model to promote sustainablehousing for the homeless. The displaymodel will be on our property andmoved to other locations so that otherchurches and city officials can get avision for how tiny home settlementson church land can operate. We alsomade space in our building for WalkingWith a Purpose to store their suppliesand regularly receive donations, as theyserve and build relationships with thechronically homeless in the east metro.During the Christmas season, welaunched When We Show Up toraise funds for several of our partnerorganizations. Our goal was to reach 50,000, but we went above and beyond– closing the fundraiser with 72,971!10We helped Mennonite DisasterService cover some of their volunteercosts and building materials so theycan continue to help individuals andfamilies who would otherwise not beable to rebuild their homes in the wakeof tragedies.Inspired by God’s generosity towards us,we “showed up” in a big way for ourwinter fundraiser! We hoped to raise 3,800 per week in new oradditional scheduled donations, and ended thecampaign with 4,125 per week! Because of theincreases in scheduled giving, we were able to keepour budget for this coming year roughly the same, and don’t need to worry about ministry cuts for nextfiscal year.Thank you to those of you who participatedin Refresh!Sustain is an online campaign we run each spring. We ask our “podrishioners” to consider regular, ongoing financial support for Woodland Hills.Sustain will be wrapping up shortly after theCovenant Partner Gathering, and our goal is to have400 Sustainers by the end of the campaign. Thesepeople from all around the world help supplementWoodland’s annual budget by around 225,000each year. We love our podrishioners, and the globalimpact we’re able to have through them!We gave funds to urban church partnersto further their ministry needs: RootsCovenant Church and Beacon ofHope Church.11

SOMA was hosted in the Jordan neighborhood ofNorth Minneapolis by Beacon of Hope Church, an African American congregation pastored byTerrell and Marquita Walter. Over the past year, the students have been immersed in teaching onscripture and theology, community, church and urban ministry, personal healing and formation, andministry equipping. Several of the students plan to stay another year as SOMA int
