What is E-Fashion? Fashion & Science a New Media Literacy Session # 1 Date:Overview:The goal of day 1 is to introduce students to key concepts and vocabulary related to EFashion and circuitry design through analyzing non-digital and digital designs as well asclassroom discussions. Students will discuss and analyze fashion designers, fashion designand e-fashion designs in pairs. Students will carry a whole group discussion on what makes agood design and personal style.Targeted principles, standards and skills:StandardsFashion DesignPrinciplesSkillStudents will be able to:Formulate hypotheses about a working circuitthat can be tested by collecting dataIdentify key elements and principles of designStudents will be ableto:Identify elements ofpersonal style.Students will be able to:Assemble a working circuitusing 3V battery and LEDRecall steps to create workingcircuitExpress personal feelings aboutaesthetics of fashionObjectives Introduce students to basics of EFashionHave the ability to construct a basiccircuitDevelopment of the ability to explainpersonal style choicesVocab and Key Concepts Concept:oElements of Fashion DesignoPrinciples of Fashion DesignoPolarity Vocabulary:oStyle – A way of doing something orbehaving.oCircuit – the complete path that anelectric current travels alongoPolarity - the particular state eitherpositive or negative with referenceto the two poles or to electrificationAssessment Role: Scientisto Functioning circuito Ability to articulate functions of workingcircuitRole: Fashion Designero Explains personal style choicew Resources Digital Divas Videoo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v HCX3ReOekJ4Digital Divas Tumblro http://dyndivas.tumblr.com/Celebrities wearing e-fashiono -enough-ofwearable-technology/
Materials: 3V Batteries White LED’s Internet access Laptop or Desktop LED, Battery and Circuit Diagram worksheet (attached). Divas JournalPreparation: Space should be designed so that students are sitting together at a large table orwith desks facing each other.Lesson Outline:Opener (5 mins.) Student round circle prompt (a round circle is an open discussion where studentscome together to focus their thoughts and ideas on the goals for the day):o Prompt: What is a designer? By the end of the discussion students should understand that theyare now designers and will be tasked with creating wearabletechnology. Review the day’s goals and outcomes:o Introduce elements and principles of fashion designo Understand a working circuito Understand how polarity works within a circuito Use DIVAS journal for reflectiono Create first photo blogActivities (60 mins.)Part 1: What’s a circuit – 10-15 mins Students receive materials (1 – 3V Battery, 1 – LED, 1 – Circuit Diagramworksheet, journal)o Students take turns reading aloud the definitions and parts of the circuitfrom the Circuit Diagram worksheet (3 mins) Vocabulary: Circuit & Polarityo Tinker and Analysis: Students are charged with solving the following issue:Create a working circuit by lighting the LED using the 3V battery (2 mins). After Tinker Time (2 mins): begin discussion about why the LEDlights, how long it took to discover solution to the problem, anyfurther discoveries. Students should take a photo of their working circuit. Students should take a few minutes to answer the questions in their reflectionjournal (3-5 mins):o State your solution for creating a working solution using a 3V battery andLED.
Part 2: What’s my personal style? – 10-15 mins Introduce vocabulary: Styleo Open discussion for students to discuss personal style (5 mins) Possible prompts for guiding discussion: Name a celebrity who you think has style, explain what thisstyle is in your own words. How would you describe your style (lady-like, chic, goth, hiphop, urban, classic, edgy, modern?) Do you have a signature staple (for example, if a strangerwere to look in your drawers or closet would they see thesame pattern over and over again or are you fond of aparticular color? Do you love dresses or just pants – if youanswer yes to any of these questions then that’s yoursignature staple). Students will use laptop or computer to find an image of a celebrity or person theythink has a style they believe aligns with their personal style (10 mins)o Students will bookmark the image and answer the following question intheir journal: Why does this person or outfit fit your personal style?Part 3: What is e-Fashion? - 10 mins Show students samples of LED clothing & wearable technology (see resources)o After each image give students time to reflect on what they like and don’tlike about the fashions aloud. Students will use laptop or computer to find an image of favorite e-fashion design.o Students will bookmark the image and answer the following question intheir journal: If you were redesigning your favorite e-Fashion design, whatwould you change and why?FINAL ACTIVITY: 15 mins Students will create a photo blog with the following:o Upload image of final working circuit. Under the image of working circuittype answers from journal reflection question: State your solution forcreating a working solution using a 3V battery and LED.o Upload image of chosen outfit or celebrity that reflects personal style.Under the image type answers from journal reflection question: Why doesthis person or outfit fit your personal style?o Upload image of favorite e-fashion design. Under image type answer fromjournal reflection question: If you were redesigning your favorite e-Fashion
design, what would you change and why?Exit slip Complete final photoblogPractice Opportunities Continue researching designers who use create efashion designs What designers of wearable technology areminorities (women, women of color?)?Teacher Reflection:How Did it Go? Were students able to create a working circuit? Was the group respectful during community time (answering questions in a groupand group discussions)? Were students able to articulate what they liked and didn’t like about differentdesigns?
PHOTO BLOG EXAMPLEIn order to solve the problem of making the LED light up using a 3v battery I put thelong end of the LED leg (positive) with the plus sign of the LED. This created aworking circuit.Solange Knowels has a great style that I think is close to mine because she alwayslooks neat and puts different styles together. Like in this picture she has classic andgalm. This is my favorite LED design. If I were going to revise this outfit I’d change theshoulders and make it shorter.
